Pricing and Ownership Interest

Honor Roll Racing provides the opportunity for individuals to participate in the Thoroughbred industry by purchasing ownership units in thoroughbreds meant for racing at world renowned tracks such as Keeneland Racecourse, Churchill Downs, and Arlington Park, as well as quality mid-tier tracks like Turfway Park, Ellis Park, and Turf Paradise that offer exciting racing with the opportunity to earn some very nice purses.  Since our horses are purchased using a lower price point than many of our competitors, our members have the opportunity to enjoy a larger share of earnings from racing at an overall lower risk.

Horse Friendly Facilities

The Honor Roll Racing team believes it has a setup for training that makes for a happy horse and in turn, increases the possibilities of having members who are satisfied with race performance.  Various off-track facilities are available for lighter training and rest periods.  It is vitally important for mental and physical health that these social animals get to spend time out in the field, catching sun, and socializing with other horses.

Trackside facilities with trainers at various tracks around the country are available for serious independent training or training in company in preparation for racing.

Training Program

It is the goal of the Honor Roll Racing team to select yearlings and two year-olds that are physically capable and have been bred to race and win sometime during the middle or latter part of their two year-old year.  So what do we do with our horses to maximize the chances of successful competition at the age of two?

Simply stated, it depends.  Not the answer everyone wants to hear, but it is the precise truth.  These are living, breathing beings like you and I.  On occasion, they get sick or get sore shins.  Some grow faster than others, and some have growing pains just like those young kids who suddenly sprout like weeds.  Some are ready to race as soon as we purchase them, others get race fit in a matter of weeks, while others (especially late two-year olds) will take a number of months of preparation following acquisition.  Some have all the physical tools from day one, but mentally need some time yet. Others, just the opposite.  So you get the point, the goal or racing at two doesn’t change, but each horse must be treated as an individual and that means some will race for the first time in June or July of their two year-old year and some will not race until a bit later.

In general, two year-olds will be purchased and sent to the trainer that Team Honor Roll feels best fits them.  If they are fit and ready to race, they will go to a training center that best fits them to prepare for racing in the near term.  If it appears they need some time to adjust or additional fitness or maturation is required, they will begin training at an off-track facility.  As long as the horse is healthy and happy, the intensity and duration of training periods will increase until such a time that the team believes the horse is physically and mentally ready for serious everyday preparation.

When a horse is sent to a trackside facility, it will get a brief period of light training during the first days of adjustment to the new surroundings.  More serious training including daily jogs, gallops, strong gallops, and eventually breezes will follow.  The duration of this will vary depending on the individual preferences and needs of the horse.  It is not uncommon for horses to go back to an off-site facility for a few days of rest and cooling off before returning to a trackside location.  We always keep in mind that these young horses, although often capable of great things, are just children.  They can be serious much of the time, but must have time to play to ultimately be at their best on the racetrack.  One of our team's strengths is the ability to see each horse as an individual and create the training schedule that best suits each particular horse.  This approach brings our horses to racing at the optimal time during their two year-old season.  They get the seasoning required to minimize the chance of injury and are ready to compete to the best of their abilities at the age of two.

We can’t give you the exact day week or month your horse will compete in its first race, but there is one thing you can be assured of.  You will be informed about what is happening with your horse.  You will not have to guess what phase of training your horse is in.  You are welcome to call Honor Roll Racing manager John Christensen at any time and the Web-site will be updated no less than weekly and at times it will be updated daily when there is significant news to report.  You have the opportunity to be as involved with your horse as you would like to be.
